Diary of an iPod

I’ve been going on about this forever on twitter, and I decided to just let all of my frustrations out here once and for all.

Four years ago, I got my iPod. At the time, it was somewhat cutting edge (being the first generation video). I wanted it, needed it, begged for it, paid for some of it, got it.

My iPod and I have gone through a lot. We’ve gone through my sixth grade music stage (when anything catchy was instantly purchased), my sixth grade TV show phase (when I felt obliged to purchase every episode of ‘Kyle XY’ and ‘Three Moons Over Milford’). My iPod was there for me when I began to branch out and listen to music away from the radio. My iPod even put up with my youtube downloading phase, for when I started to hate purchasing iTunes gift cards. My iPod was there when I starting feeling bad about this but, still not wanting to buy from iTunes, began to buy physical CDs from the local music shop. My iPod has my name engraved on the back. My iPod has gone through numerous pairs of headphones. Up until this year, my iPod was my friend.

Then this year, my iPod betrayed me. Lately it’s just like, ‘I don’t like this song, I refuse to play it’. (Granted, this iPod has put up with my for four years. I don’t know how long that is in iPod years, or how long iPods tend to last, but it sounds like a while). I’ve tried staying faithful to my iPod. When the iTouch first came out, I ignored my want for it. The nano chromatic had me going crazy, but I kept my iPod. When my friends began to get the iTouch, i though I needed it too. But on to the problem.

I start track next week, so I decided to update and charge my iPod in preparation. After not letting me upload videos (even though they were specifically in iPod format), I spent an hour re-converting the videos until they finally uploaded. I brought my iPod to school that day, and tried listening to it after I finished my work. It let out an insanely high pitched beeping noise, shocking everyone within a three meter radius. I did the cool reset thing and tried again. It seemed to be working perfectly, until I pressed pause. The song paused, but wouldn’t start again when I pressed play. I thought ‘okay, whatever, cool reset thingy to the rescue!’. So I reset it in order to de-freeze it. It then had some problems with playing specific playlists.

So, now more than ever, I definitely need a job. Because I really want a new iPod. Which iPod is the best buy?

Depends. I would recommend a Touch, but there are pros and cons.

Pros: it’s like a mini, very portable computer, speakers on the newer models, apps
Cons: TAKES OVER YOUR LIFE, if you lose it you feel like you have lost a part of your soul, more expensive.

Overall, I loved mine with all my heart and I always recommend it to people. If you get one, DON’T GET 8GB! Since you can have notes, apps, and photos, you’ll want a bit more space. :)

@Clem: The thing is, I’m really scared I’ll break the touchscreen. At the same time, though, I do use my iPod more than my phone, and it would probably be convenient to have it all.

The Nano is so damn cute :( It’s not fair. The touch is also a bit pricier…but I really want one :o

It’s really hard to break the screen. I threw mine in my bag with keys, money, notebooks, everything. This is coming from the person who was ANAL about her nano and wouldn’t let anyone touch it for fear of omgz finger prints. Anyway, my iPod’s screen was fine. Basically, if you don’t drop it on pavement, you’re good. The glass is scratch-resistant, even.

    @Clem: Oh that’s great!!! :D

I have an iPod classic and an iPhone, so I’m not sure what iPod I should recommend :P It depends about the space, really. My music library is like 40GB and my TV shows/movie library is like another 20GB, so… classic is pretty much the only option for me. It really depends about space, and whether or not you’d use the apps the iTouch has to offer.

@Manda Yeah I probably wouldn’t, but I like the option, y’know? Not to mention, I have no idea how people have so much music. I had like 250 songs on my previous iTunes (had to erase and sync with new computer)

Technology isn’t really made to last very long, is it? 4 years is a very long time to have something!

I’ve never had an iPod, and I don’t really want one. I’ve never been the type to spend money on/ask my parents for things like that xD Maybe this will change if/when I start working, because I wouldn’t mind having an iPod touch or a ~smart~ phone.

@Kaylee: You’re amazing to not feel the absence of a cell phone. Or at least seriously want one (I guess you can’t feel the absence of something you’ve never had?). I don’t plan to ask my parents for it either (at least not all of it, maybe if they pay half for my bday?), I’m applying for jobs this year! :D :D :D

It depends on how much music you have on your itunes, and how much of that you actually actively listen to - aka, how much music do you want your ipod to be able to store? I’ve always had an ipod classic (currently the 120gb, since my 30gb was stolen and insurance replaced the market equivalent… yay free upgrade), because I listen to a LOT of very different music, and it’s a bitch to have to choose what to omit from your ipod.

Though, if you don’t listen to thaaat much music, i don’t see why you couldnt go with an itouch. Then again, they cost more. Mehh.

@Amanda I have a LOT of music. But, as far as iPods go, I only put my absolute FAVORITES, because that’s what I need most. If I was to upload every song i owned, I’d definitely fill up my 30GB iPod. But I only keep my absolute favorite, and have only about 300 songs. Plus I just love the iTouch. I wish my iPod classic/video hadn’t died though D:

I have an iTouch, which is good for me because I’m the sort of person who needs to obsessively check my email every five minutes. It’s also very good if you want to be watching videos and things because it has a huge screen. You have the app store as well which is cool. But then if you want a huge memory for loads of music and films and things I’d probably go for the iPod Classic.

@Jasmine I HAD the iPod classic…no more. Haha :) I got my iTouch today, since my mum agreed I needed one from trackk!

@Crissy: Ooh, yay! Have you named it? I recommend getting the lightsaber app. It has given me hours of fun :P

@Jasmine Oohh I shall look into that. I was the sonic screwdriver one, hehe.
I have not yet thought of a name, but I am thinking… :D
